JD Powers UK 2018 vehicle dependability survey. Last place: BMW.

I mean, I know premium brands are going to do worse in this than regular ones, because there’s more toys to break and higher expectations from owners. But really? Worse than Landrover? Worse than FIAT? Mein herren, it’s time you got your shit together.

edit: In looking for an appropriate Polandball to respond to Maxye nko’ s comment below, I fell down the internet rabbit hole and came up with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , or the Paradox of the Heap, which is a name so appropriate it has to be shared . So I put it to you:

How many defects need to be fixed before a BMW stops being a heap?

I thought it was pretty well known that BMW engines now are designed to pretty much last the period of a lease, and then catastrophically fail before 100k miles.

Does this include Mini? Those are built in the old Morris factory which would explain.

Th e key flaw as explained to me by people who work in automotive advertising is that all issues are weighted the same. So if someone’s infotainment system bugs out it’s the same as another car’s transmission blowing up.

Resident Automotive ad guy here, that’s an accurate depiction. In fairness though, they are literally direct from consumer complaints.

Another thing to consider is that BMW buyers expect perfection. Most Hyundai buyers  expect a functional vehicle.

there really aren’t “more toys to break.”

Not at all surprised to the premium brands below the regular o nes, for the reasons you’ve just explained. I AM surprised, however,to see BMW below Landrover and Jag - I’d have thought their buyers would have pretty mu c h the same expectations (in terms of actually getting stuff fixed, if not about how many things might need fixing ) as BMW ones.

Despite the theories and facts around these, I’m always amazed that Porsche does so well. Are their owners willfully ignorant of problems (my theory on Honda)? Or are they really that good? I’ve heard evidence for both.

Neither Pors che (US#2) nor Lexus (US#1) show up in the UK rankin gs - inadeq uate volumes, perhaps?

I find it hard to believe Porsche ow ners are willfully ignorant. B ut then again, major f uckups like the IMS bearing which would have destroyed any other brand seem to just be seen as p art of the experience with Porsche, so who kn ows.

It’s really interesting comparing the US to UK stats. Overall Brits seem to be more fault tolerant than Americans (unless they actually get better cars?), but BMW do miles better in the US. maybe the US plant’s actually got better quality than G ermany, shock horror, or maybe their SUVs are better designed t ha n t heir saloons.

I can safely say that in my area, the BMW 3-series (German) and X5 (US) are almost as common as any other mainstream vehicle. So there are definitely samples over here from all over the world, in addition to the fact that we (Alabama) export virtually all of the Mercedes SUVs and some of the C-class saloons, as well. So I do believe there is a homogenization today that can’t be pinpointed to a specific plant.

Maybe with BMW, there is a certain surprise/delight aspect for owners previously coming from other brands.

Or maybe since so many of them are leases, people just don’t complain (about minor issues)  since they’ll be replacing the car soon anyway...

I’m always amazed that what North America sees as unreliable we don’t and what you don't we do. Curious.

No “you” about it - I’m not in the US I’m I n New Zealand. Round here we don’t see a car as unreliable till the fence wire we fixed it with has rusted out three or four times. I’m just speculating on comparative furriners.

Sorry mate.

I forget where some people are from.

But I do notice quite a bit that there is a difference in reliability between the same makes and models of cars between North America and Europe.

As a life long BMW enthusiast I’m not surprised. The older stuff was rock solid. The old school M20/30 was like death and taxes, you could just count on them.

The newer stuff is horrid. RTABs that always fail fast, LCAs that fail fast, cooling systems that have sucked since 1992, rod bearings with M motors past the S52, VANOS issues....

Fuel injectors and HPFPs on the N54 that’s on like the 15th revision, coil packs on the 30th revision... it’s insane.
